Joint Base Charleston

Joint Base Charleston Youth Sports Program

Youth Programs offers a wide array of organized, instructional and recreational sports activities for youth to help them develop desirable physical skills and to mature emotionally and socially. The sports program provides opportunities for children to have contact with other youth, volunteer leaders, and youth program staff. It also provides opportunities for parents to socialize and to contribute to our Air Force community, by serving as volunteers in the youth program.

Coaches

All volunteer coaches must be certified through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) prior to being assigned a team.  The Youth Sports Program adopts the NYSCA standards of safety and coaching etiquette.  The NYSCA teaches fundamentals, basic sport skills, sportsmanship and emphasizes participation rather than winning.  In addition, each coach must complete an Installation Records Check (IRC) and become certified in First Aid and CPR.   All training is mandatory and will be provided prior to the beginning of the season.

Start Smart

A program of the National Alliance for Youth Sports, teaches children age 4 the basic motor skills necessary to play organized sports while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents.  The programs were developed to be informative and fun, so children and parents will have a positive first time sports experience and continue participating in sports beyond this introductory level.  Currently, Joint Base Charleston offers Start Smart programs for Basketball, Baseball and Soccer.  These are 6 week programs which meet once a week for an hour, cost is $25.
