Cardboard Regatta Competition

During the first week of August, the New Wave Pool on the Weapons Station will be the location of a brand new competition: The Cardboard Regatta. Register now and get your duct tape and cardboard ready. Your cardboard boat will be put to the test in a 50-yard (one lap, up and back) race at the New Wave Pool. It will be a mad dash for the 16 and under crowd, followed by an adult heat.

If you've never built a boat out of cardboard before, we have some guidelines to help guide you. You may want to start designing and constructing your build now, as the competition is on Wed., August 3rd, at 4pm.

We're encouraging everyone to get creative with your builds!  You can paint your water craft and give it a theme or name. We're very much looking forward to the variety and fun. Boats may be a maximum width of 5ft and a maximum length of 6ft, with no maximum height requirement.

If you don't have materials at home, the New Wave Pool will have some materials available on site for building before the competition. Come over at 4pm and take advantage of the limited supply of cardboard and duct tape made available! You may want to bring your own scissors or exacto/utility knife. (And permanent marker for decor?)

Building supplies can include:

  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Duct Tape
  • Utility Knife
  • Latex Paint
  • Clamps
  • Measuring Tape
  • Straight Edge
  • Scissors
  • Paint Brush or Roller
  • Acrylic Latex Caulk

We also have a list of prohibited items:

  • Glue
  • Varnish
  • Two-part Glues (i.e., epoxy)
  • Styrofoam
  • Metal or metal coils
  • Plastic
  • Pasteboard or Chipboard
  • Wood

We want you to have fun and keep safety in mind! Lifejackets are required for non-swimmers. Motors are not permitted, so bring your best paddles! (If you need any, don't forget you can rent them at OAC/ORC.)

The boat must be made before the race, and can only be made of cardboard or corrugated cardboard, acrylic latex caulk, and duct tape. Your boat may not have any kind of wax, resin, or vinyl coating. Wood, plastic, or plastic wrap, fiberglass, metal, styrofoam, and other materials that may aid in flotation or make the boat more rigid are prohibited. Cardboard must also not be sealed with sealants. Duct tape of varying colors can be used for creativity, but must have come manufactured in that color.

Boats should be a maximum width of 5ft and a maximum length of 6ft. There is no maximum height requirement.

But we bet you want to know about PRIZES, too! There will be prizes for:

  • The Fastest Boat (must finish the race)
  • Most Creative Design
  • The Most Dramatic Sinking

We hope to see you there! You can register and receive more details by calling 843-794-4173.
